Diversion washed away near Chorla route amid heavy rainfall
Belagavi: The region has been witnessing continuous heavy rains for the last Few days, causing rivers in Belagavi and nearby districts to overflow. As a result, a temporary diversion built over a river near a key route connecting Belagavi to Goa via the Chorla Ghat has been completely washed away. This has caused a major disruption in traffic movement, especially for those traveling between Karnataka and Goa.
The temporary road was constructed as an alternative route while a permanent bridge in the area was still under construction. Due to the heavy flow of water in the river, the makeshift diversion could not withstand the pressure and collapsed on Saturday evening. The sudden incident caught many travelers off guard and left vehicles stranded on either side of the damaged route.
Officials have confirmed that reconstruction of the diversion is not possible at the moment due to the high water level and strong current in the river. They are now working on completing the new bridge on priority and have assured that it is expected to be ready for use in the next few days.
In the meantime, all vehicular traffic is being diverted via alternate routes through nearby towns. Police teams have been deployed at both ends of the affected stretch to assist travelers and guide them through the new routes. Commuters have been advised to plan their journey accordingly as the detour may take longer than usual.
Authorities also clarified that only the temporary diversion has been damaged, and the rest of the Chorla road remains open. Efforts are ongoing to ensure that the permanent bridge is opened to the public as soon as possible to restore normal traffic flow.
